PhantomX SoundFont
PhantomX is a General MIDI compatible HQ Soundfont optimised for BassMidi based samplers/synths.
It contains at least 128 instruments and 13 drum kits. The drum kits are partially compatible with the XG/GS standard for greater versatility and Midi compatibility. The instruments are based on the famous Roland Fantom X professional workstation synthesizer. 90% of the patches in the GM set and 99% of the drum kits are taken from this synth. Looped and balanced for the Bassmidi engine. Others* (if Roland didn't have a GM compatible patch) from high quality sf2's for best GM compatibility.
*Usually from the last section: like helicopter, gun shot and so on.
It's recommended to use PhantomX on Windows:
- Falcosoft Midi Player
- Bass Midi VSTi
- VirtualMIDISynth.
On MacOS: tested with Colibri player.
ATTENTION: It's not guaranteed to work properly with FluidSynth based samplers.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why did you start a new project when you have Orpheus 2?
A: Orpheus and PhantomX have different philosophies. Orpheus 2 is mainly acoustic/live/real-sounding approach, while the PhantomX is aimed at lovers of the original Roland sound. It has more compressed, punchier, energetic sound.
Q: Why Roland? Why not Yamaha or Korg?
A: Roland was chosen as the undisputed trendsetter in synthesizers in the 90s, when MIDI was at its peak in popularity. A lot of MIDI was written on the SC-55, SC-88, JV-1010, XV5080, etc. modules that were common at the time. I wanted to create an instrument that would give you that recognisable sound, but on a higher and more sophisticated level than the old SC-like synthesizers and soundfonts.
Q: Did you choose only GM patches on the original Roland Fantom?
A: No, I selected the best and most GM-compatible sounds from all the tons of sounds available.
Q: Is PhantomX multi-layered?
A: Some patches have 2 layers. But Roland's approach was not to use many layers, but to model the real behaviour using modulators and the synth engine. I used the same approach and tuned the modulators to get a more realistic velocity curve.
